Sandy Hanebrink is the Executive Director of Touch the Future Inc and the reason the first Walk2Walk events were established. On August 20, 1987, Sandy had an unusual allergic reaction to an antibiotic she was given after reconstructive jaw surgery for injuries from a car accident. This reaction changed her life forever. Sandy became an incomplete quadriplegic from Transverse Myelitis as the result of this reaction. Sandy and her family call this day her Celebrate Life Day. She was not expected to make it but beat the odds. She has had an amazing life. Is a Paralympic medalists and has World and American records. But until three years ago, she has not been able to walk. On August 9, 2017, Sandy trialed the Ottobock C Braces successfully and for the first time in 30 years walked using this amazing technology. The C Braces are FDA approved for home use. Sandy was successful but the insurance companies denied coverage. This started our work. We began appeals processes and creating awareness of the need for coverage, the health and quality of life benefits, and fund raising. We started with one event and a crowdfunding campaign but knew this would not be enough. So the Walk2Walk virtual event site was born, creating a community that can walk, run, ride, race, roll or even crawl to raise the needed funds so that individuals who are paralyzed can walk. The Walk2Walk site and events are launching on a very special day, Sandy's 33rd Anniversary Celebrate Life Day. Please join us and walk so others may walk too.
